Energy is Fluid – Let’s talk about Saturn

The other day, I saw astrologer Chris Renstrom was on Astrology Hub’s podcast and decided to tune in. Chris said some things I need to respond to.

Saturn represents restrictions and limitations of all kinds. It represents structures, including social structures and hierarchies. Chris mentioned how he doesn’t understand how Saturn in Capricorn got to mean Big Government and Big Business for modern astrologers.

Well, Chris, let me tell you!

Energy Is Fluid

Just so we’re square, I adore Chris Renstrom. He is a very insightful astrologer and that is why I tuned in to the podcast. His voice is needed. He made a ton of good points, like the connection between Mars in Aries and firefighters, police, EMTs, etc. Mars in Aries as representing those specific professions.

I agree with that because those occupations have a lot to do with the energy of Mars in Aries: bravery, courage, fast-paced, heroism. I also, however, see Mars in Aries as representative of individual action and the lone pioneer, moving forward into unknown territory to explore or simply for the challenge. Or, perhaps to dominate, to own, to rule. So, I see Mars in Aries as the people rising up for what they believe in. Going deeper into what the energy stands for makes more sense to me. I see Mars in Aries as representing the people of a social movement, standing up for what they believe in, even though they know they could get hurt. That, to me, is pure Mars in Aries.

Likewise, I see Saturn in Capricorn as representing law enforcement as well. It’s structured, there’s a hierarchy, it’s about law and order, enforcing limitations, restrictions. Sure, the police officers have courage, too, especially in some situations. But I believe astrology is fluid. Energy is alive, constantly moving – the archetypes are there and they will always be there, but humans evolve and so does society. I’m not a huge fan of labeling something just because somebody told me that’s what it meant. I need to fundamentally understand things in order to fully agree with them.

Father Moon

Let’s take the Moon as an example here: Moon is said to be representative of one’s mother figure. Did you ever think about why that is? The Moon’s archetypal energy has a lot to do with nurturing – how we nurture and how we were nurtured and taken care of as children. So, what if one was raised by a single father? Would it not represent that dynamic within you and him? He raised you, nurtured you, put food on the table, kept things steady for you, so wouldn’t your Moon come to represent your relationship with your father as a child? What if your father was more “feminine”?

You know, that’s a whole other blog post that I will have to circle back around to. Soon.

Saturn and Marginalized People

Chris mentions Saturn in Capricorn as representing marginalized people, impoverished people, etc. That is totally true! I remember a long time ago, over 10 years ago now, that I picked up a book from the Rosicrucians (esoteric Christian astrology, very fascinating, check it out!) and they’d mentioned Saturn ruling dark-skinned people and peasants.

But, is this because that’s the way it is? Or is it because it’s something that brings limitation? If blue eyes brought a person significant limitations in life, would it not be partially ruled by Saturn? Would Saturn not have something to do with it? I believe so.

I see Saturn as emblematic of anything having to do with limitation and restriction. Also, contraction. Saturn and Capricorn have a lot to do with social order and hierarchy, too. Order inherently keeps us restricted. Social order, social hierarchies, keep us confined to the level we’re in. It’s less about the actual label and more about the energy inherent within that label.

This is why Saturn can represent both impoverished people at the bottom of the social order (their limitation being poverty), people of color (limitation being race), and (drumroll please) big government! Why? Because the government is a working body of limitation and restriction keeping the social order. It is the harbinger of Saturn, telling us all what to do.

Jupiter and Big Business

Chris mentioned Jupiter ruling big business. I agree with this because of the visionary, expansive, wealthy aspects, but I also believe Saturn rules big business as well. It operates under a hierarchy, is organized, structured, has a pecking order, etc. Saturn and Capricorn are highly structured. Any foundation that provides structure, stability (at least tries to), and hands out law and order is under the rulership of Saturn.

Something To Keep In Mind

Remember, astrology has definitive rules but it also has a lot to do with interpretation. Each person who practices astrology must first learn all of the rules and then apply that learning elsewhere, to grow, to see what works for him or her. Just because one astrologer says one thing, it doesn’t mean other astrologers are automatically wrong (obviously, some things might just be false, but you get my point).

That’s the beauty of astrology. Learn the rules and then develop your own perspective once your understanding deepens.

So yeah, that’s all for now.
